Australia Arab Women's Dialogue

Date: Monday 18 - Tuesday 26 March

Since early 2011, the world has been transfixed by the momentous changes taking part in the Middle East as a result of what has become known as the ‘Arab Spring’. Women have played prominent roles in the Arab Spring and historical efforts to secure basic rights, equity and justice.

In 2013, Australia is hosting the inaugural Australian-Arab Women’s Dialogue. The Dialogue brings to Australia emerging women leaders from Egypt, Morocco, Lebanon, Jordan, the Palestinian Territories, Iraq, Libya, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The women delegates are from diverse backgrounds and are making significant contributions to their emerging democracies. All occupy positions of leadership in areas such as the media, human rights, politics, NGOs, business, film-making and medicine.

Together they will explore women’s participation in contemporary developments, both in the Arab world and in Australia, through a series of meetings and forums in Canberra (18-20 March), Sydney (21-23 March) and Melbourne (24-26 March).

The Australian Arab Women’s Dialogue is jointly convened by Dr Victoria Mason from the ANU College of Arts and Social Sciences, School of Politics and International Relations and Ms Libby Lloyd AM.
